The Irving R. Newhouse Building is a key component of Washington State’s Legislative Campus Modernization program, replacing the original 1934 facility while maintaining the architectural character that defines the Capitol Campus in Olympia. Designed to complement the surrounding historic government buildings, the project required modern building envelope systems that could meet current performance standards while preserving the traditional appearance expected within the campus setting, even utilized salvaged glazing materials from the original building. Mission Glass was selected to fabricate and install the exterior glazed aluminum curtain wall systems and aluminum entrance assemblies that form a significant portion of the building’s exterior envelope.

Working closely with the project team, Mission Glass provided fabrication, project management, and installation services for the curtain wall and entrance systems. The glazing scope was designed to deliver long-term durability, thermal performance, and weather resistance while maintaining the clean lines and proportional detailing required by the project’s architectural design. Extensive coordination was required to integrate the glazing systems with adjacent exterior materials and structural components throughout the multi-story facility.

A prominent feature of the project is the installation of Ellison Bronze balanced doors at the building’s primary entrance. Known for their durability and use on civic and institutional projects, the balanced doors provide a traditional appearance consistent with the surrounding Capitol Campus while offering reliable operation for a high-traffic public building. Through detailed fabrication, field coordination, and quality installation, Mission Glass helped deliver a building envelope that combines modern performance requirements with the timeless character expected of one of Washington State’s most significant public projects.
